Chapter Ten

Lachlan

Sitting across from her building, I watch as Maisyn moves from room to room. My favorite smile is plastered on her face, and I can’t help but smile with her.

It’s been a few days since we’ve spoken. I’ve been out of town on business. I take my cell out to check in with Nicole before walking in for my appointment.

“Good evening, Lachlan,” she answers immediately.

“And to you, Nicole. I’m in town and getting ready for my next appointment. How are things there?”

“Morgan called, wants a sit-down tomorrow. Nothing more pressing.”

I roll my eyes. “I’ll touch base with Morgan sometime tomorrow. Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Will there be anything else?” She hesitates.

“No, thank you.” I end the call, climbing out of the seat. I meander across the street. Pushing the door open, I’m taken aback by what I find. “Maisyn?”

“You hate it?” Her brows furrow as she picks at her hair.

“No, I do not hate it.” I move closer to her as she twirls. “What made you change?” I stare at her as she models her dark brown hair. No blonde. No pink. I think I miss it most of all.

She shrugs. “Time for a change, I guess.”

“It’s beautiful.” So why do I feel the coil in my stomach tighten?

Her eyes shine at my compliment, making my heart pound in my chest and the sickening feeling fades into the background. “You think?”

“I do, it’s different.” Her lips quirk, and I’m a goner. Again.

“How can I help you?” Her eyes dart to mine.

“I have an appointment…” I swallow past the lump forming in my throat. “…with Cliff.”

Her face falls. “Cliff?”

“You said I should ask him to finish my work, is that still okay?” She picks at her nail as I chew the inside of my lip.

“Oh, yeah. No, you’re right. I’ll get him.” The light in her eyes dulls as she walks away.

“Ya know, to be a brilliant businessman, you suck at love.” Flynn grins at me from across the room.

I hang my head. “Tell me about it. What am I supposed to do with her?”

“I’m no expert…hell, yes I am.” He shoots me a mischievous grin. “Love her. You were doing great until that whole ‘I have a secret evil twin.’” He makes air quotes.

“Hey, Lachlan.” Cliff barrels into the room, ending all conversation about Maisyn. Just what I don’t want.

Cliff finishes my work without me seeing Maisyn again. My stomach churns as I think about letting her down again. I’m sick of doing it. The good news, I kept Cliff away from her.
